  • Row as horsemeat file shelved

In Saturday’s Guardian , Felicity Lawerence notes that the final report of the Elliott Review into the integrity and assurance of food supply networks will not now be published before the autumn.

The report, originally due in the spring, had been expected to appear before the parliamentary summer recess. With the cabinet reshuffle leading to the appointment of Liz Truss as the new Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs it is perhaps not surprising that the new Minister “blocked” its publication.

Prof Elliott told a conference of food experts in May that he had been warned by a senior civil servant that his report into the horsemeat scandal was so hard-hitting the government might want to bury it. This week he declined to comment other than to say he was still awaiting notification of the publication date.
