Public Analyst & Scientific Adviser
37 hours per week
£53,787 - £57,080 per annum
Worcestershire Scientific Services, Bewdley Road, Stourport on Severn DY13 8QR
Worcestershire County Council is looking to appoint a Public Analyst & Scientific Adviser to act as Head of Laboratory / County Analyst, in preparation for the end of its contract with the Stevens Partnership in 2008.
The County Laboratory serves some 20 local authorities in addition to Worcestershire and has a reputation for customer focussed service delivery. It is a leader in GM and DNA analysis, and active in many regional groups. Although currently located in Stourport on Severn the business will be transferred to new premises in the near future.
The service provides a "one-stop shop" approach to full fill the needs of its local authority clients and the County Analyst will be vital in promoting its role as a champion of consumer protection. There are 30 staff employed in two teams, food & consumer safety and occupational hygiene, with a Laboratory Manager who is also a Public Analyst. This post is responsible for managing the whole service, reporting to the Head of Trading Standards, Scientific Services and Waste Management.
The service has a good standing, achieved by an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to delivery of Public Analyst services. It is important that the new manager of the service has a suitably "can do" approach and style. The Food Standards Agency's review of Public Analyst services is expected to bring new challenges for the Worcestershire laboratory and the County Analyst will be expected to take a proactive approach.
Applications are sought from experienced MChemA holders who have also developed skills in business management, customer service, project development, client training, reporting and the expert witness role. Evidence of a national profile in the Public Analyst profession would be a major advantage. Applications will also be considered for part time or flexible working arrangements.
